Rheumatism or rheumatic disorder refers to an acute or chronic illness which is characterized by inflammation and reduced function of connecting or supporting structures such as the joints, tendons, ligaments, bones, and muscles. Polymyalgia rheumatic, sometimes referred to as PMR, is a common cause of widespread aching and stiffness that affects adults over the age of 50, especially Caucasians. Because polymyalgia rheumatic does not often cause swollen joints, it may be hard to recognize. It may occur with another health problem, giant cell arteritis.

Rheumatica Acta: Open Access is an initiative of Peertechz to bring breakthrough manuscripts in all areas related to Rheumatology to support research into the causes, treatment, and prevention of rheumatic disorders. The mission of Rheumatica Acta: Open Access is to raise awareness of the importance of early diagnosis in the commonly misdiagnosed condition of polymyalgia rheumatic.

Why Peertechz’s Rheumatica Acta: Open Access?

The cause of polymyalgia rheumatic is not known. It is linked to immune system problems, genes, and an event, like an infection, that triggers symptoms. Polymyalgia Rheumatic (PMR) is a relatively common chronic inflammatory condition of unknown etiology that affects elderly individuals. It is characterized by proximal myalgia of the hip and shoulder girdles with accompanying morning stiffness that lasts for more than 1 hour. Approximately 15% of patients with PMR develop Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA), and 40-50% of patients with GCA have associated PMR. Despite the similarities of age at onset and some of the clinical manifestations, the relationship between GCA and PMR is not yet clearly established.

Peertechz’s Rheumatica Acta: Open Access is an initiative to provide new information that will help scientists better understand polymyalgia rheumatic and giant cell arteritis. The manuscripts published in Rheumatica Acta: Open Access provides information related to the role of genetic predisposition, immune system problems, and environmental factors to causes of Polymyalgia Rheumatic and Giant Cell Arteritis.
